celebrity status

i don't have anything against celebrities but it concerns me that a lot of young people look at celebrities and model after them. I know this topic has been covered extensively in the media but my focus is related to the rise of the celebrity status in Nigeria....yes i love dbanj and genevieve but i think Nigeria has become or is becoming a society almost like America where celebrities are considered royalty. The only difference is that America is a developed nation. One thing that America is suffering from is that with the rise in celebrity status, a decline in an interest in math and science followed. I am not saying that the phenomenon called "celebrity" lead to this decline but i think it did contribute. The fact is that if you poll every American teenager asking them to write their top 3 role models, a lot of them would name a celebrity. This to me is quite discouraging, and i think this is where Nigeria is heading to. We celebrate our celebrities and fail to recognise other people who are making a difference and making their mark in math and science. And math and science is where development lies. I am guilty of this too, in fact if you go through my posts on Nigeria 90 percent of it is related to music, films and celebrities. I just noticed that lately everyone want to be a singer or an actress with the recent insurgence of the Nigerian film and music industry. This is good but i think with too much focus on these things and not enough focus on things that really matter our society would become a society of people that can really sing, dance and act but not do much of anything else. This is where America finds itself now and why the administration is working hard to promote math an science. Something which we as Nigerians need to focus more on....
